Of Gods and Men Movie

I watched the movie Of Gods and Men this weekend. It's a very well-told, with some great actors, based on a true story about a group of monks in Algeria who come under threat during the civil war there in the mid-1990s. It seems particularly apt now that we are facing down the 10th anniversary of 9/11. When terrorists first show up at their Trappist monastery, the 7 monks have varying opinions on whether they should stay or leave, and even about the ways in which they might leave. Over time, many of them change their minds, and they become increasingly unified and courageous, despite the increased danger. It's striking to watch a movie whose stars are middle aged to elderly men outfitted in the robes of a monastic order - a far cry from anything out of Hollywood!
